True repose is not only refreshing our body and soul but also readjusting our directivity by being free from the hectic everyday life.
All of you are working so hard despite the continuous heat wave. I really appreciate the way you make the utmost efforts to fulfill your duties. Einstein, Edison, Marx, Freud, George Soros, and Steven Spielberg…… Do you know what these people have in common? The answer is that they are all Jewish. There are only about 16 million Jews scattered around the world, but they are exerting their influence in a variety of fields such as sociology, economics, politics, and culture. They own many global firms, financial institutions, and broadcasting companies; and 20% of the U.S. Ivy League students such as Harvard and Yale are Jewish.
The Jews achieved
such excellent results due to their unique education and culture. The most
noteworthy fact is that they have known
the significance of repose and actually put it into practice. Before
Christianity prospered, the human race actually did not have the concept of
holidays or vacation. This concept first emerged in the form of the Sabbath by
the Jews. On that day, all Jews take a break from work and worship God. They
look back and reflect on what they did in the past week and prepare for the
next week. Through repose, the Jews develop creativity and get the motivation
to work harder. Their repose culture is one of the reasons why the Jews became
There is a newly-coined word called the ‘burnout syndrome.’ This is a type of illness that occurs to busy modern people, especially those who are totally engrossed in certain tasks, showing symptoms like sudden severe fatigue and lethargy and even self-hate. Not all these people work overtime, put off vacation, and immerse themselves in work. In fact, doctors say the biggest problem of people suffering from the burnout syndrome is that they ‘do not know how to rest properly,’ meaning that they do rest, but not really.
Usually when we decide to go on a summer vacation, we are obsessed by the imperative idea that we must spend that time going traveling or experiencing something totally new. Thus we occasionally exhaust ourselves and spend too much money, getting even more stress rather than relieving it. Doing pleasant things with family and friends is fine, but you must spend some time only for yourself even just for a day in order to really let your body and soul take a break.
When I am on vacation, I pick out a couple of books I wanted to read and spend all day curled up with a book without interruption. Then my head, which had seemed so complicated, becomes clear, and I really feel as if I have healed myself. ‘Vacance,’ the French word for vacation, originates from the Latin word ‘Vanus,’ which means ‘empty space,’ or ‘Vacatio,’ which means ‘to be free from something.’ In other words, vacation means to be free from everyday life even just for a moment.
The world-renowned entrepreneur Bill Gates is famous for spending unique vacation called ‘Think Week.’ Twice a year he secludes himself in a small lakeside villa for a week, enjoying repose by himself. During this period he never speaks to anyone even on the phone, strictly keeping the time to himself and thinking only about himself. All important decisions of Microsoft, including his declaration of retirement in 2008 that shocked the whole world, were made immediately after the ‘Think Week.’ True repose is not only refreshing our body and soul but also readjusting our directivity by being free from the hectic everyday life.
I know that the Hyosung employees may be under a lot of stress in daily life or at work. As they say, the busier you are, the more you need to slow down. We are surrounded by busy and difficult tasks, but it is extremely important to regain our energies through repose and create an atmosphere in which we can work harder. I hope we can look back on ourselves and compose our thoughts away from work during vacation, and spend some time to look at our everyday issues in a whole new perspective. If we empty out the old things and fill up with new things, we will be able to contribute greatly to the company.
I would like to ask the executives and team managers to create an atmosphere in which team members can freely apply for vacation or leave of absence to refresh themselves. I request you to make efforts to make our company a GWP (Great Work Place) by creating the ‘Work while you work, play while you play’ culture, where team members can focus on their work with willingness and in good condition.
