The “Small but heartfelt Heroes” event promoted by the Public Relations Team throughout the last month drew a collection of heroes who had touched the lives of Hyosung People.

The first Heroes we met are Party Leader HONG Intae and KIM Daeyoung at Changwon Plant. This is only a brief view of the Heroes whose hearts are filled with passion toward people and equipment.

A veteran and mother! Your Heroes HONG In-tae and KIM Dae-young

Section Chief SON Won-ryeol of the production support team, administration division, Changwon Plant of Power & Industrial Systems PG shows no hesitation in endorsing HONG In-tae and KIM Dae-young as a ‘Hyosung Hero’.

“HONG is well known as an expert in crane electric control. He carries the work improvement activities on his shoulders by contributing to improving crane management, and reducing malfunctions. KIM, is a perfectionist in work, and a role model in character. Bothe of them are accomplished engineers and, at the same time, great colleagues to work with.”

HONG is the winner of the best idea award from Changwon Plants Idea Contest. Despite being a 23 year veteran, Hong dedicates his work to reinforcing his technical competence, and elaborating improvement points.

“When there is a problem on a crane, hanging 30 meters above the ground, someone have to ride a sky and go up the heights to fix the problem, which is, obviously, an extremely dangerous work. This was the point of my question. ‘Is there any other way to remotely control the crane from the ground?’, and then I sought solutions for improvement.”

His idea came true and now, workers are provided with the luxury to work in a safer environment with their feet on the ground operating and controlling tall standing cranes from the benefit of a remote control panel right next to them. KIM Dae-young, our other hero is the bearer of astonishing technology. Unlike his masculine physique, he shows delicate care and love to people and is the mood maker, earning the nickname ‘Mama KIM’. With 30 years field experience under his belt, he is a perfectionist in his craft, leader in action, and bridge between generations. He is, the true hero of the relatively young peers.

Sharing knowledge, down to the most minor thing, in the most simplest way, the Experts in Mentoring

Dividing people with the same criteria, and expecting the same level of performance regardless of experience is rather harsh on the less-experienced. In that front, the two heroes are philanthropist that are eager to share their know-hows considering the level and standards of each peer.

“Frankly speaking, it was quite tough in the past. The overall atmosphere was not that polite in teaching and training employees. The words at the time were ‘Steal with your eyes,’ or ‘Learn over the shoulder’.”

Once wearing the same shoes, KIM understands the sentiment of minors and tries to explain every detail in the easiest fashion. He also emphasizes that ‘Experience is Skill’. Moreover HONG urges that everyone should ‘take memos on everything’, and extracts, identifies, and disclose problems to help newcomers to understand what is the problem and how to respond to the problem.

In these courses, they do not put their head high and force others to admire their experience, just because they are seniors. They tone down the dialogue to the viewpoint of their minors, speak what the problem is, and explain how to solve problems in the language of their peers with relevantly short experience. PARK Yong-su, the latest addition to the force says he envisions his future from the two heroes.

“Their emphasis on the time I invest to feel with my hand and elaborate by myself becomes my skill does not come to me in vain. They embody what they say. Taking memos, which might seem to be useful for now, eventually comes into use later. I have found answers to questions that I slept on for days in my memo. I am way behind in my craft compared to the seniors, but following their footsteps, and adding each and every experience under my belt definitely helps me master my craft.”

Exceptional Know-hows of Hyosung Heroes! Thorough comprehension and work in harmony.

Up on top a crane standing feet and yards above the ground, people working side by side, depending on each other, the 10 members of the crane force spend 90% of their working hours up inside the crane control box. To make things work up in the air, fluent and transparent communication sustaining a positive atmosphere is essence. That is why the two heroes share the same principle that ‘Communication is the Prerequisite for Safety.’

“We have to find ways to perfect our crafts, and sustain a positive relationship between each other. My only hope is that every member of our team goes back home safe, while enjoying the comradery of our team. I am overwhelmed being called a ‘Hero’, I would rather consider myself as a libero (laugh)”

Laughing from embarrassment, KIM Dae-young expressed his determination to work with a heavier responsibility. HONG In-tae, on the other hand, still has many things to do.

“There are still much equipment that should be improved, and more things to learn. I will not rest until I retire from Hyosung. I hope my work contributes at least a mere fraction to Hyosung’s growth.”

In thoroughly maintaining their equipment, and closely taking care of major management items, these two heroes know only one speed. With their love to their peers, work and equipment, they manage over 700 cranes and joyfully pass down their know-hows. HONG In-tae and KIM Dae-young are the perfect heroes brightening the future of Hyosung.
